KARACHI: Former military dictator Pervez Musharraf did not appear before a medical board constituted by the Sindh government on the request of the Balochistan authorities to ascertain whether he was able to travel to Quetta to attend the proceedings of Akbar Bugti murder case in a court, according to officials.

The 11-member board is headed by Dr Anis Bhatti, the director of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, with Dr Mohammad Taufeeq, medical superintendent of the Sindh Services Hospital (SSH), as its convener.

The board met at the SSH at 11am and its members waited for the retired general for hours but he did not turn up.

Mr Musharraf, officials said, had been duly informed in writing about the board’s meeting and told to appear before it and get himself examined.

It was the second time that the former president did not show up before the medical board. A similar situation was reported after an earlier board’s meeting in January and lack of security was cited as the cause of his absence.

Officials said they had informed the provincial health department and the court in Quetta about Mr Musharraf’s failure to appear before the board.

Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti was killed during a military operation in Balochistan’s mountainous Kohlu district on Aug 26, 2006. His son Nawabzada Jamil Akbar Bugti has nominated the former president and other high-ups of his regime in the murder case.
