Over 5m vaccinated in 3rd anti-polio round

PESHAWAR: The third round of the anti-polio campaign in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the Sehat Ka Ittehad programme concluded on Friday.

During the third round that lasted for three days, about 5.1 million children under the age of five years were vaccinated across the province, which was over 96 per cent of the set target. Special catch up activities had been started to achieve the remaining target as well, according to a handout issued here.

According to a report of polio emergency operation centre of health department, during the campaign refusal cases were also reported in some districts, including Peshawar.

Meanwhile, a special campaign of injectable polio vaccination (IPV) was also started in Peshawar and Bannu districts. The two districts are considered to be high risk areas with regard to polio virus as majority of internally displace persons of tribal areas and Afghan refugees live in the two districts. The special IPV campaign will continue up to March 28, expected to cover a total of 297,451 children of four months to two years of age.
