Woman jumps into nullah, children rescued

RAWALPINDI: A domestic dispute drove a woman to commit suicide by jumping into a nullah along with her two little sons in Kahuta on Friday. However, the children were rescued by onlookers.

In a suicide note found from her purse, the deceased asked her husband to get married to another woman of his mother’s choice, “who could cook well and obey your mother.”

Police said Nazia Arjumand, a resident of Kahuta, got married with Tahir Mehmood a few years ago. The couple had two sons – two-and-a-half-year-old Uzair Mehmood and three-month-old Umair Mehmood.

The police said Nazia took her two children to the bank of the nullah in the Dhupri village, wrapped them around her body and jumped into the water. The people of the village rescued the two children from the water but the woman was pronounced dead when she was taken to a hospital.

The police said the woman carried a purse containing a handwritten ‘suicide note’ addressed to her husband.

Amir Khan, an inspector of the Kahuta police who is investigating the case, told Dawn that the woman had been in distress due to a domestic dispute.
