Suspension of work on dam irks BHC

QUETTA: A division bench of the Balochistan High Court (BHC) expressed its dismay on Saturday over the discontinuation of construction work on Mangi Dam and asked the chief minister and chief secretary to accord priority to the project and get it completed at the earliest.

The bench in response to a petition filed by one Abdul Wahab said that further delay in the completion of project may spell disaster, since Mangi Dam was the main source of water supply to Quetta where the situation was already alarming.

The court observed that the federal government had disbursed funds but authorities concerned had failed to utilise it, causing huge loss to the exchequer.

Officials of different departments submitted to the court that the Frontier Works Department began work on Mangi Dam in 2006-07 but left it unfinished because of its reluctance to continue work on the rates approved earlier. Officials hoped that the Provincial Development Working Party would approve the revised PC-1 in its meeting on April 20.
