Journalists convention held in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: President Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (Butt group) Afzal Butt has said that the PFUJ planned to launch a decisive struggle, adding that about 80 per cent journalists in Karachi and other parts of Sindh were unable to work independently.

He was addressing an All Pakistan Journalists Convention organised by the Hyderabad Union of Journalists at Sindh Museum. Mr Butt regretted that while factory workers were aware of their rights most journalists were not.

He said even the judiciary didn’t provide justice to journalists. He said that the convention should take a decision to launch a struggle after detailed deliberation.

Secretary General Khurshid Abbasi said the PFUJ had struggled for freedom of expression and stood by the TV channels which faced serious problems in the recent past. He said journalists suffered financially when a TV channel was victim ised.

The convention urged the government to pay compensation to the heirs of slain journalists and bear expenses of education of their children.
