Comic exchange in Sindh Assembly as chair breaks

KARACHI: Sindh Assembly is no stranger to goof-ups and gaffes. In the latest such instance, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) lawmarker Aamir Moin Pirzada's chair broke during Thursday's session of the house, prompting a comical exchange between him and Speaker Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrani.

"The contractor should be summoned. What kind of chairs is he supplying? If a member falls someday, it will lead to a tragedy," said an amused Pirzada.

Pacifying him, Durrani said they would have run the appropriate checks, adding that it was possible that somebody had played a mischievous prank with the chair that may have led it to break.

"You people move here and there and naturally that exerts pressure on a chair," said Siraj.

Not to be outsmarted, the MQM lawmaker said: "A revolving chair is meant to rotate. Even while purchasing furniture for our houses, we buy quality pieces that last for at least 20 years."

A straight-faced Durrani said he would ensure that chairs were locked before the next budgetary session of the assembly to prevent them from moving or rotating.
