Rai Zameer new Gujrat DPO

GUJRAT: The Punjab government has finally posted Rai Zameerul Haq as the district police officer (DPO) here after transferring him from Muzaffargarh on Saturday.

The post had been lying vacant since the transfer of Rai Ijaz Ahmed, a son of Rai Zameer, on April 16.

Interestingly, a father-son duo will be DPOs in the Gujranwala range for the first time in the history of Punjab Police. Rai Ijaz had been posted as the Sialkot DPO last month.

Official sources told Dawn Rai Zameer would assume the charge on Monday (tomorrow). Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Kamran Mumtaz was the acting DPO here for two and a half months.

It is believed that Rai Ijaz had been transferred from Gujrat allegedly over pressure from a group of ruling party lawmakers from the district. But now the posting of his father here could be unfavourable for the politicians who were behind the earlier transfer.
