Is Mera Naam Mary the highlight of Kareena Kapoor's fading career?

With legendary item songs like Halkat Jawani and Fevicol under her belt, Kareena Kapoor had her own big shoes to fill with her latest number, Mera Naam Mary. The song, which features in Karan Malhotra's martial arts drama Brothers, was unveiled on the internet today.

There's no doubt that Kareena knows what she's doing; there's lip-biting, winking and plenty of hair flipping involved and people were thrilled to see the much-awaited song video.

However, not everyone was on the same page.

And we have to agree with the latter opinion!

While Kareena does look sultry, her outfits don't do her justice and the song isn't very catchy either. Decent choreography might have been Mary's saving grace but was found lacking as well; the song's definitely no 'Lovely'.

The question remains: Why has Kareena stooped to being the quintessential Bolly item girl? We know she has more talent than just shaking her waist in a way that could give Shakira a run for her money.

Apparently the actress only has 15 to 20 minute screen time in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, the movie that she has been promoting so heavily. Even her roles in the Singham 2 and Gabbar are considered to be minuscule ones. The same Kareena who made our jaws drop with her meaty roles in Chambeli or Omkara is now doing cameos and item numbers.

A year or two ago, Kareena was at that juncture in her career where she should have proven her mettle. Instead, she chose to get pigeon-holed as a blink-and-miss appearance actress. Are the offers just not rolling in like they used to?

We still love and miss her as a leading lady on screen. Certainly, Kareena Kapoor Khan will be back because her career has defied the odds in the past: despite the lacklustre performance of a number of her films and her rejection of some pretty big projects, she has always bounced back. After all, there will never be another Bebo.
