Pakistan’s participation in Asian volleyball in doubt
LAHORE: The participation of the national volleyball team in the upcoming Asian championship is in doldrums as the Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF) has no financial resources to meet the expenses of the tour.
The continental event is being held in Tehran, Iran from July 31 to Aug 8.
PVF chairman Chaudhry Mohammad Yaqoob told Dawn that although the federation had already written a letter to the IPC ministry to help it out, it had not received a positive response from it.
Yaqoob informed that 16 teams were participating in the championships and Pakistan had the potential to earn a prominent position.
“We set up training camps at Wah Cantt from our own resources but we need around Rs2.5 million to send the team to Iran,” he said.
He added that despite the fact that the PVF had followed the National Sports policy, it was yet to earn the affiliation of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB).
He said two prominent players of the camp namely captain Naseer, (playing in Lebanon) and Aimal Khan (playing in Taiwan) were yet to join the training camp.
“Pakistan players are earning foreign contracts and if the government extends a helping hand to the PVF, the country could earn a prominent place in the world of volleyball game,” he said.
