Top hockey officials removed

KARACHI, Oct 16: The council of the District Hockey Association Central/West Zone-I, Karachi, has removed its top officials following a vote of no confidence.

The president of the association Ahmad Abdul Waheed and secretary S.A. Majid have been replaced by Syed Nasim Hussain and Abdul Azeem Khan. Nasim was nominated as acting president, while Azeem elected secretary.

Waheed and Majid were shown the door after eight of the 11 council members voted against them at a meeting on Wednesday because of various charges.

Those who voted against the two officials were, Syed Nasim Hussain (vice-president), Azmat Pasha (treasurer), Abdul Azeem Khan (associate secretary), Nusrat Hussain (joint secretary), Aniq-ur-Rahman, Saghir Hussain, Abdul Naeem Khan and Iqbal Khaliq (council members).

A statement of the association on Thursday said the step was taken after Majid failed to call the meeting as requested by the eight members of the council on Sept 21, while Waheed had been out of country for the last 15 months.

“The decision has been taken because of Majid’s unlawful and immoral attitude and failing in initiating hockey activity in the district. He also threatened Al-Saghir Club that it would be debarred without the consent of the council.

“Majid had also taken an illegal step by serving a fake legal notice on the members of the council after they requested for a meeting of the association,” the statement said.

According to Pakistan Hockey Federation’s constitution, litigation among the members or provincial and district associations is prohibited.

The statement alleged that district players were suffering since the hockey ground of DHA Central/West Zone-I was not available owing to Majid’s apathy towards the game.

The removal of the officials is the second development in Sindh as president of Karachi’s Zone East Zafar Iqbal has also quit from the post for “personal reasons.”

Meanwhile, the DHA Central/ West Zone-I announced it would organize inter-club hockey championship from Oct 20.
