Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has signed a new four year deal with the 20-time English Champions, the club announced on Friday.

The Spanish stopper was the biggest talking point during the recently closed summer transfer window when Real Madrid's proposed deal to sign De Gea from United fell through at the last minute due to a delay in transfer of documents.

Talking to the club website, the 24-year-old Spanish international said, “I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career. I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans.”

"Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career. I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my teammates to be successful.” said De Gea, who was the player of the season for United last season.

De Gea was key to United's fourth place finish in the 2014-15 Premier League season. His point blank saves and bravery in the box helped the club in the most difficult of situations.

The young Spanish sensation has not started for United in any match in the current season due to the controversy surrounding his transfer and manager Louis Van Gaal's reported dissatisfaction over the goalkeeper's lack of focus.

Dutchman Van Gaal is now happy, though, as the question marks over his number one man have now came to an end.

“I am absolutely delighted David has signed a new contract. He is one of the best goalkeepers in world football. I am very pleased that he will be part of the team for many years to come,” said Van Gaal.

“David made a very important contribution to our performance last season and he has been the club’s Player of the Year for the last two seasons.”

“He is a popular player who is keen to learn and enhance his game. At such a young age for a goalkeeper, he has many years ahead of him,” said the United boss who will be eyeing to end the club's two-year trophy drought.

A happy ending to the De Gea transfer saga will be seen as the icing on cake for the club's success in summer transfer window of 2015.

United brought in the German international captain Bastian Schwienstieger from Bayern Munich and Morgan Schniederlin from Southampton to strengthen their midfield.

The other inclusions to the Red Devils' squad are Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian and Anthony Martial.
