US claim men’s volleyball World Cup title

TOKYO: The US won their first men’s volleyball World Cup in 30 years here on Wednesday with a 25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 25-20 win over Argentina.

Maxwell Holt scored 18 points as the US team won the event for the first time since 1985 and secured a berth at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Italy also wrapped up an Olympic spot by finishing second with a 26-24, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19 win over world champion Poland, who lost their first match and finished third.

The US, Italy and Poland all finished with 10 wins and one loss. The final ranking was determined by fewest sets lost.

Matt Anderson of the US finished the tournament with 172 points and was named MVP.

Meanwhile, defending champions Russia beat

hosts Japan 27-29, 25-17, 21-25, 25-17, 15-13 to finish fourth.—AP
