Sikhs preserving gurdwara on self-help basis

SIALKOT: The preservation of historical ‘Babey di Beri Gurdwara’ is under way in Sialkot by the Sikhs paving the way for Sikhs from across the world to visit the place.

The gurdwara remained rundown for several decades. The Sikhs used to pray at the gurdwara until Partition.

Sikhs’ leader Sardar Jaskaran Singh has been appointed the caretaker of gurdwara by the Sikh elders in Nankana Sahib, Lahore, Hasanabdal and Kartarpura-Shakargarh.

Jaskaran Singh says the preservation work will be done soon. He said Sikhs were doing the work on their own.

He said boundary walls were also being raised to a considerable height to save it from intruders.

He said Sikhs’ sacred book ‘Guru Granth’ would also be kept at the Sialkot gurdwara.

About the history of this workshop place located in Sialkot city’s congested Hamza Ghaus locality here, he said Sikh Guru Nanak Dev had stayed here for several times 500 years ago.

He said Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee President Parmjeet Singh Sarna, the Pakistan Sikh Gurudawara Parbandhak Committee and the Pakistan Sikh Sangat had welcomed the start of the much delayed repairing and renovation of Babey Di Beri Gurudawara building.
