Artichive: Green Burning Car I

Andy Warhol painted “Green Burning Car I”, measuring 90 inches x 80 inches, oil on canvas made of synthetic polymer, silkscreen ink and acrylic on linen in 1963, which is a part of his extremely gloomy sequence titled as ‘Death and Disaster’ series. This canvas is one of the highly valued paintings of the collection which was later sold on the record price. All these serigraphs were based on grainy, black and white tabloid photos of race riots, fatal accident scenes, suicide and different instruments of death.

This canvas is considered as one of the representative painting of the pop culture which was inspired by some photographs published in the weekly magazine depicting a road accident as the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a utility pole. It is in the private collection. — M.I.
