Aqeel to lock horns with Ahmed in tennis final

ISLAMABAD: Top ranking player Aqeel Khan will face Ahmed Chaudhry in the final of Subh-e-Nau National Tennis Championship as both seasoned players crashed their respective opponents in semi-finals at the PTF Complex here on Friday.

In the first semi-final, Aqeel defeated Mohammad Abid in straight sets.

The match was relatively well contested as Abid made good resistance in both sets, however, he could not defeat Pakistan’s number one, who has been enjoying the top position for the last 16 years.

Aqeel won the first set comfortably 6-3, however, in the second set his opponent made good comeback and gave some resistance. Ultimately the seasoned player crashed him 6-4 and qualified for the final.

In the second semi-final of the day, Ahmed outclassed Moham­mad Mudassar in straight sets.

A good fight was expected between the two players as Mudassar was seventh seed whereas Ahmed was eighth seed.

Ahmed won the first set 6-3 and completely outclassed his opponent 6-1 in the second.

The final will be played on Saturday.

In the ladies singles semi-final, top player Sara Mansoor won the first semi-final against Shahida Farooq without conceding a single game in two sets. She outclassed her opponents through aggressive game.

She will meet Sara Mahboob in the final who won her match against Mehak Khokhar without any resistance. In the one-sided show, Sara registered her 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Mohammad Muzammil and Aman Atique will lock horns for the title of boys U-18 after convincing victories over their opponents.

M. Muzammil defeated Aqib Umar and Aman Atique was victorious against Saqib Umar in the one-sided semi-finals.

While in U-14 semi-finals, Aqib Umar reached the final after beating Sami Zeb 6-3, 6-1.

He will play Hamza-bin-Rehan in the final who won his semi-final against Waleed Anwar.

In the men’s double, pair of Aqeel and Ahmed Chaudhry after bting Mohammad Abid and Usman Rafique reached the final.

They will play against Yasir Khan and Shahzad Khan who defeated Mohammad brothers —Mudassar and Muzammil — in the one-sided semi-final.

Boys U-14:

Aqib Umar bt Sami Zeb 6-3, 6-1; Hamza-bin-Rehan bt Waleed Anwar 7-5, 6-3

Men’s doubles:

Yasir Khan/ Shahzad Khan bt M. Muzammil/M. Mudassir 7-5, 6-1; Aqeel Khan/ Ahmed Chaudhry bt Usman Rafique/M. Abid 6-3, 6-1.
