Army stands victorious at all-Pakistan Amir Khan boxing tournament

KARACHI: The reigning national champions of the army team clinched victory at the all-Pakistan Amir Khan Boxing Tournament, as they bagged three gold medals after tough resistance in the final matches.

Around 180 boxers from 17 teams across the country participated in the tournament that took place in Karachi’s Lyari area and lasted a week.

Among the audience on the last day of the tournament as chief guests were Karachi Corps Commander Lieutenant General Naveed Mukhtar, DG Rangers Major General Bilal Akbar and world-renowned Pakistani boxer Amir Khan.

Also attending the finals were cricketer Javed Miandad and hockey Olympian Islahuddin, along with other key figures.

The all-Pakistan Amir Khan boxing tournament, organised at the Peoples Sports Complex, featured final boxing matches in different categories.

The army team took the lead in the final playoffs by winning three gold medals, while Rangers, Navy, Wapda, PAF, Sindh and Gilgit-Baltistan also received a gold medal each.

Earlier, organisers said that the gold medalists will receive a sum of Rs20,000 while silver medalists Rs15,000 each. In addition, all the 180 participants have earned an appearance money of Rs5,000 apiece.

The corps commander Karachi lauded the Rangers upon successful proceedings of the tournament and made promises to organise an international boxing event in the future.

The curtains were drawn on the tournament amid a spectacular display of fireworks after prizes and certificates were distributed among the boxers.
