Jirga reconciles feuding councillors in Abbottabad

ABBOTTABAD: A jirga on Wednesday helped reconcile the ruling and opposition members in the Abbottabad Tehsil Council who had been feuding since the passage of the budget four months ago. The jirga was held at the Chairman House here.

After the settlement, the opposition agreed to withdraw a writ petition it had filed in the Peshawar High Court’s Abbottabad circuit bench, against the passage of the budget, sources privy to the meeting said.

The two sides also agreed to probe the appointments made in the municipal committee, besides reaching a consensus on the allocation of development funds. It was agreed that ruling members would be given 60 per cent and opposition members 40 per cent of uplift funds, respectively.

The Jirga was attended by six members each from the two sides.

ARRESTED: The police arrested six robbers on Wednesday during an action in the Thandiyani forests. The robbers belong to different parts of Hazara division. The action was taken on a tip-off.

The arrested robbers were named Bilal, Faizan, Nouman, Abid Hussain, Waheed and Safeer, who were produced before the local magistrate on the same day.

Police said during initial interrogation, the accused admitted to have committed a number of robberies in different parts of Abbottabad. Police also recovered from them a Kalashnikov, two pistols, a cutter and other items used for breaking locks.

TRANSPORTERS FINED: Secretary Regional Transport Authority Mohammad Pervez and Traffic Inspector Nadir Khan fined at least 90 public transport vehicles for over-charging on Wednesday.

The officials warned that route permits would be cancelled if the transporters violated the officially-fixed fares.
