Delhi, Hyderabad chalk up third straight wins

NEW DELHI: Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad both made it three wins in three matches in the India Premier League as they defeated Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab, respectively on Saturday.

Delhi overpowered Mumbai by 10 runs at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi.

After posting 164-4 on a slow surface, the hosts restricted the defending champions to 154-7.

Mumbai needed 32 runs of the last two overs, but captain Zaheer Khan bowled a fantastic 19th over in which he dismissed Kieron Pollard, after which Chris Morris bowled an outstanding last over – in which the Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma was involved in a collision that resulted in him being run out.

Sharma was dismissed for a brilliant 65 (48 balls) after adding 53 with Ambati Rayudu (25) and 41 with Krunal Pandya (36 from 17 balls).

Earlier, after being put in to bat, Delhi recovered from 54-3 as Sanju Samson (60 off 48 balls) and J.P. Duminy (49 not out put on 71.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad downed Punjab by five wickets at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in the night fixture at Hyderabad. After David Warner opted to bowl, his bowlers rose to the occasion by restricting the visitors to a modest 143-6.

Warner (59 off 31 balls) himself killed the run-chase, thanks to his quick-fire 90-run partnership with Shikhar Dhawan (45, and though they lost four wickets in quick time thereafter, Hyderabad strolled past the finish line in the 18th over.

Earlier, Shaun Marsh, the most consistent among Punjab batsmen, battled along and got to 40 before his team got past the 140-run mark, thanks chiefly to Axar Patel’s 17-ball cameo of 36.

Left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman was brilliant in his four-over spell as the young Bangladeshi captured two wickets for just nine runs in a man-of-the-match performance.
