Khyber Greens lift peace football trophy

LANDI KOTAL: Khyber Greens defeated Young Jamrud in a penalty shootout to win the first floodlit football peace tournament played at Jamrud Sports Complex.

The tournament started on June 15 and 28 teams from Bara, Jamrud and Landi Kotal participated in it. The political administration of Khyber Agency had provided financial assistance for holding the night tournament.

The two equally poised teams played the full length of the game without a goal being scored. Both the teams also remained goalless in the additional time and thus they were given five penalty kicks each.

Khyber Greens scored five goals against four of Young Jamrud. A large number of local sports enthusiasts watched the match which ended late on Thursday night.

Khyber Agency political agent Khalid Mehmud gave away the winning trophy to Khyber Greens while prizes were also distributed among the players of the winner and runner-up teams.

Speaking on the occasion, the political agent said that holding of such sporting activities was a manifestation of restoration of peace in Khyber Agency and his administration would assist in organising more such events for engaging the youth of area in productive activities.

He said that the Khyber Agency had produced a number of international players in different games and he was proud of such players. He said that the administration would soon build a sports ground in Bara.

CURRENCY SEIZED: The Khasadar force at Torkham seized six million Afghanis from a handcart on Friday. Officials said that the Afghan currency was concealed in a handcart and a suspect who escaped after the seizure was trying to take it across the border to Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the political administration in Landi Kotal released 14 prisoners, who were arrested for petty offences, so they could celebrate Eid with their families. Assistant political agent Rahimullah Mehsud visited the local lock-up and ordered release of the prisoners.
