Story Times: The exciting world of weather

Who doesn’t love pleasant cold and cloudy weather, the rain or the snow? Or the rainbow after the rain? It is always so exciting to see the changing weather, either it is the thrill of playing in rain or when the thunderstorms pass by!

So those of you fascinated by the different moods of the weather and want to know more, WeatherWizkids will provide you with weather information that is brief, to the point and easy to grasp.

The homepage has four main categories in menu such as ‘Weather’, ‘Natural disaster’, ‘Experiments’ and ‘Kid’s zone’. Each drops down into its subcategories and you get to know about drought, rain, tornado temperature, clouds, lightening, thunderstorms and much more in ‘Weather’.

While in ‘Natural disaster’, you can read about sinkholes, hurricanes, volcano, tsunami, storms and other disasters; in ‘Kid’s zone’ you can go through jokes, folklore, questions, flashcards, etc., all related to weather.

I personally liked the category ‘Experiments’ with lots of easy to do weather-related experiments at home.

For instance, ‘Tornado in a jar’ just requires liquid soap, vinegar and water, and you make a tornado, isn’t it interesting?

The site claims to have the largest collection of weather-related activities, with jokes, facts, flashcards, images, and other resources, including a feature that allows kids to see their local forecast.

Another website related to weather, but with a twist, is Interactive weather maker by Scholastic — the site where you control the weather. Click the Start button, this will take you to a new page where you see a beautiful house setting.

Although the directions are given, it is fun to make whatever kind of a day you like just by moving the humidity slider and either of the two temperature sliders and see the wind blowing fast, snow, rain and thunderstorm.

This simple site shows how these factors can influence weather in the region.

And if you still want more weather information, Scholastic offers WeatherWatch which has multiple interactive activities which can help you observe, analyse, investigate and gather data on weather information.
