Woman ‘burnt alive’ by husband, mother-in-law
GUJRAT: A mother of three was allegedly burnt alive by her husband and mother-in-law for not bringing them Rs0.7 million from her father at Tanda village on Saturday.
Nisar Ahmad, of Sialkot district, told Tanda police that his daughter Afshan Parveen was married to Abdul Majeed of Tanda some nine years ago and the couple had two sons and a daughter.
He said that for the last few weeks his son-in-law had been forcing Parveen to go to her parents and bring him Rs0.7m, otherwise he would marry another woman with whom he had an affair.
Ahmad said that his daughter had told him on phone that her husband had also quarreled with her over the issue.
Feeling concerned at the situation, Ahmad along with some of his relatives went to his daughter’s house to resolve the issue. He said that as he entered the house, he saw that his daughter was all in flames while her husband and in-laws were standing there as silent spectators, making no effort to save her.
Ahmad said he and his relatives tried to extinguish the fire but meanwhile most of Parveen’s body was burnt.
He said that his daughter told him that she was burnt by her husband and mother-in-law.
She was shifted to the Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Hospital from where doctors referred her to the Mayo Hospital, Lahore, given her a critical condition. Later, she succumbed to her burns at the hospital.
Tanda police have lodged a case under sections 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) against Abdul Majeed and his mother.
Police said they had arrested the prime suspect, Majeed, and started investigation.
