ISLAMABAD: Secretary of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Shahbaz Ahmed believes that the absence of skipper Mohammad Irfan Senior will not affect national team’s performance in the Asian Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy, taking place in Malaysian city of Kuantan from Oct 20-27.

Irfan, who had been named Pakistan captain for the 4th Asian Champions Trophy could not proceed with the team as his passport was with the British embassy and he could not get it back in time.

Expressing his displeasure at Irfan’s attitude, Shahbaz said that at the time of team’s announcement the federation was totally unaware that the player had submitted his passport to the British Embassy.

“It is regrettable that the team’s captain was unable to accompany the team for the event. His attitude shows how much he cares about the country,” said Shahbaz, his tone dripping with anger.

“The players should follow in the footsteps of former hockey greats such as Hassan Sardar, Kaleemullah and others who always played for the country and never gave preference to money,” he said.

“We were successful as we always played for the country and wanted to see the country’s flag flying high everywhere in the world,” he added.

The PHF secretary said that Irfan’s absence would not be felt by the team. “I believe the team can do well without him too,” he remarked.

He sounded confident that Pakistan team would successfully defend its title in the event. “I see the final of the event played between Pakistan and India. I’m optimistic our boys will outclass traditional rivals and once again earn gold medal,” said Shahbaz.

“As we are the defending champions our players will go into the final with a different frame of mind. They will be in high spirits to claim the title.”
