Story Time: Personalised cords

If you have the same earphone cords or data cable as your friends’, chances are that you might mix them up and mistake theirs as yours.

These days, headphones, ear buds and data cable come in all varieties; some with colourful cords, some without even cords. Everyone wants to have something unique, so today’s DIY will be bringing life into our ordinary cords with a touch of colour by wrapping them in cotton yarn or embroidery floss.

This will not only give an extra layer of protection to your cords, but also a personalised touch of style that will prevent it from getting mixed up with someone’s else’s.

Things you need:

  1. Embroidery floss/cotton or wool yarn (any colour)

  2. Headphone cords/data cable, etc.

  3. Scissors

Directions:

Choose the yarn or embroidery floss of your choice, you can use just one colour or more to give a multicoloured look to the cords. Then choose the cord you want to personalise.

  1. Make a couple of tight knots at the base of your cord. (Pic 3)

  2. Pull the yarn to the left of your cord and make a four (triangle) with the yarn going over and not under the cord as in Pic 4.

  3. Now pull the yarn under the cord through the four or triangle you just created; see Pic 5.

  4. Then pull the yarn all the way up, keeping it tight to the first knots you tied at the base, as in Pic 6.

  5. Now we are going to start the tiring process, that is repeating the steps from step 2 to step 4. And keep repeating it, see Pic 7.

  6. After repeating the steps for about 10 or more times, a fine knot pattern will form. Keep going until you finish as in Pic 8.

  7. If you want to start with another colour in between, just cut the yarn and tie a tight knot with the other colour yarn and start repeating the steps from 2 till 4. (See Pic 9.)

Viola! You have created a personalised cord!

Note: To make it even better: you can tuck in beads, sequences or make dots with glitter glue on the finished product.
