LANDI KOTAL: About 21 suspected persons were taken into custody during a search operation in different localities of Jamrud on Sunday.

Curfew was imposed in most parts of Jamrud including Jamrud Bazaar during which traffic remained suspended on Peshawar-Torkham Highway.

The local residents were cautioned against coming out of their houses during curfew, which was imposed early morning and lifted at around 2pm after completion of the search operation.

Officials said that the operation was conducted after the killing of a khasadar and injuring of three more during an armed attack on Takhta Beg checkpost on Saturday evening.

Arrested persons include two wanted militants

Banned militant organisation Lashkar-i-Islam claimed responsibility for the attack. It said that the attack was carried out in retaliation to the arrest of a number of tribesmen by security forces after killing of a health worker during anti-polio drive in Jamrud some two weeks ago.

Officials said that at least 21 suspected tribesmen including two wanted militants were arrested during the search operation conducted in Wazir Dhand and Shah Kas localities.

They said that a large quantity of arms, ammunition and narcotics was also seized during the operation. Seven of the arrested men and the seized arms were later shown to mediapersons at Jamrud tehsil offices.

On the occasion, Assistant Political Agent Ziaur Rehman Marwat said that the escaped prisoner had also handed himself back to Khasadar Force on Sunday.

CRICKET: North Waziristan defeated South Waziristan by seven wickets in the inaugural match of All-Fata Candyland Cricket Championship played at Jamrud sports complex on Sunday.

Seven teams from seven tribal agencies and one combined team from six frontier regions will participate in the championship, which is to be played under league system.

The eight participating teams have been divided into two groups with North and South Waziristan along with Khyber and Orakzai placed in group A while Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand and frontier regions are placed in group B.

STUDENTS: The students of recently reopened Kohi Sher Haider Degree College in Bara have demanded filling of all the vacant posts of lecturers along with immediate provision of free transport and clean drinking water to them.

The college remained closed since 2009. Some parts of its building were also damaged in attacks by militants during the last seven years of its closure. The college was reopened in October.

The students at the college said that a number of posts of teachers were vacant since the restart of their classes while students coming from Akkakhel and Shalobar were in need of free transport.

They also complained about non-availability of clean drinking water in the college.
