Gujrat TMA moves to beautify city, widen busy road
GUJRAT: The Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) in collaboration with the City Beautification Committee has demolished the Municipal Corporation’s outer wall from the Nawab Sahib Chowk to widen and beautify the Circular Road and the busiest commercial area of Muslim Bazaar.
The Circular Road and Nawab Sahib Chowk will be widened up to nine feet. The historical building of a girls primary school -- known as committee school that was in the same compound as the Municipal Corporation -- has become visible now after demolition of the wall.
The building had been abandoned two decades ago and the civic body planned to restore its lost glory.
Since the school was upgraded to higher secondary level and shifted to another building adjacent to the ladies and children’s park along Ramtalai Road more than two decades ago, this original building had been lying abandoned.
TMA Administrator Irfan Ali Kathia and City Beautification Committee Chairman Aurangzaib Butt jointly inspected the site of the demolished wall and directed the officials concerned to renovate the front part of the school building, which would add to the city’s beautification.
Mr Kathia told Dawn the congested Circular Road as well as the busy square of the city would now be widened as the Municipal Corporation’s official land had been allocated for the purpose to ensure smooth flow of traffic. A small monumental structure would also be built in the centre of the Nawab Sahib Chowk.
He added that the TMA would also build at least six public toilets on the rear side of the corporation’s compound whereas all kinds of billboards would be removed from the school building to make it attractive.
Butt said his team in collaboration with the district government and TMA had been striving to make the city clean and beautiful, which was why the outer wall had been demolished.
