Sanitary workers demand salaries, regular jobs

KASUR: Scores of the Kasur Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) sanitary workers demonstrated on Thursday outside the DCO office for the release of their salaries and regularisation of jobs.

There are 250 permanent and 102 daily-wage sanitary workers with the Kasur TMA.

Led by Boota Masih, workers carrying banners and placards inscribed with anti-TMA slogans, held a sit-out outside the DCO office.

They said the TMA had not released their salaries for the last two months.

They said the Lahore High Court had allowed the regularisation of the workers on contract for 20 years.

DCO Amara Khan held dialogues with the protesters and said their demands would be considered.

Recently, the Kasur TMA sacked 40 sanitary Muslim workers who have been on contract for several years.

A TMA official said most of them were recruited by political workers and they never performed duty.

TMO Rai Mansha said the workers would get their salaries before Christmas. He said they were in talks with the workers to sort out the regularisation of jobs.

He added that the sanitary workers who had refused to work had been sacked.
