HYDERABAD: Naila Rind’s final post-mortem report reveals that her death was caused by constriction of neck, leading to asphyxia from hanging, and finds no sign of sexual assault.

Acting police surgeon Dr Wahid Piracha on Friday confirmed to Dawn receiving the final report and said that asphyxia was sufficient to cause death in ordinary course of nature resulting from antemortem hanging.

Naila Rind, a final-year student of Sindhi department at Sindh University, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room in Marvi hostel 13 days ago.

The victim’s initial post-mortem report prepared on the basis of external examination of the body had also found no marks of violence on the body.

Khaskheli remanded

Jamshoro police on Friday obtained 15-day remand of Anis Khaskheli, son of a public-sector medical university’s registrar, in police custody from antiterrorism court Hyderabad.

Khaskheli was arrested on the basis of data retrieved from Naila Rind’s mobile phone which showed he was in frequent communication with her.

Police had initially obtained six day remand of the suspect and now he would be in custody for 15 days.

Police also made an amendment to the FIR of Naila Rind death case. Police had earlier cited Sections 9 and 13 of Electronic Crimes Ordinance 2009 when the FIR was lodged on Jan 6 at Jamshoro police station soon after Anis’s arrest as they were not aware of the fact that parliament had passed Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 as new cyber law.

The investigating officer of the case filed an application before ATC Hyderabad, seeking amendment to the sections of the FIR.

Now, Sections 9 and 13 of 2009 Ordinance had been substituted with 15, 20, 21 and 24 of 2016 Act.

Other Sections of Pakistan Penal Code, 315 and 316 and 6/7 Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, remained intact.

Police had not yet released Agha Babar Pathan, a clerk working for the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) who was picked up on the basis of information gleaned from his friend Anis Khaskheli.

A police source said that police had not shown Pathan arrested and assured his family that he would be released if his involvement in Naila Rind case along with Anis Khaskheli was not proved. Otherwise, he would be booked in the case, said the source.

“We have taken into custody Pathan’s mobile phone. Its data is being retrieved. Mobile phones of some other Sindh University employees like wardens have also been obtained,” he said.
