Woman sentenced to death for daughter’s ‘honour’ killing

LAHORE: An antiterrorism court on Monday sentenced a woman to death for killing her daughter in the name of ‘honour’ after the girl married a man of her choice.

The convict, Parveen Bibi, with help from her son and son-in-law burnt Zeenat alive at their residence in the factory area last June.

The presiding judge of the Anti-Terrorism Court-IV, Chaudhry Muhammad Ilyas, also sentenced Zeenat’s brother Muhammad Anees to life imprisonment while her brother-in-law Muhammad Zafar was acquitted.

The prime suspect, Parveen Bibi, confessed to her crime during the police investigation. Zeenat’s family harboured a grudge against the girl after she married Hassan Khan of her own freewill.

Later, the family asked Zeenat to come back home pretending they had forgiven her and she believed them. On the day she was killed, the suspects threw kerosene oil on Zeenat and set her on fire. Residents of the area informed the police about the incident.
