35pc of deported from US are Pakistanis
WASHINGTON, July 28: Most of the people deported from the US since Sept 11, are from Pakistan which is also a close US ally in the war against terror.
Besides, a large number of the 13,000 men set aside for the largest deportation in the US history are also from Pakistan.
Statistics released this week by the Department of Homeland Security show that nearly 35 per cent of the people deported from the United States during the last two years belong to Pakistan.
Pakistan is also among 25 mainly Muslim states whose nationals are required to register with immigration officials while in the United States. During the registration process, they are interviewed under oath and are fingerprinted and photographed.
Pakistan is also the only country whose nationals have been deported on chartered planes. So far four planes have been sent home since the Sept 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
Early this year, over 83,000 mainly Muslim men reported for special registration. More than 13,000 of these men have been selected for deportation. Officials at the Homeland Security Department say they are finalizing arrangements for this largest deportation in their history, which may start soon.
