‘Red alert’ in Kurram tribal region

PARACHINAR: The political administration and security agencies on Thursday issued a ‘red alert’ after receiving reports that suicide bombers and fighters of the militant Islamic State group had sneaked into Kurram Agency from across the Afghan border. As a result, all educational institutions were closed and tribesmen stood to guard against any eventuality.

Political administration officials said that soon after receiving the reports they asked the local people, particularly those residing near the border, to enhance security near their areas.

Tribesmen through the public address systems at mosques made announcements about the threat.

Consequently, armed volunteers set up bunkers on the roof of houses and near the city.

Meanwhile, the education department announced three-day closure of all institutions in Kurram.

Murtaza Hussain, president of the National Education Council, Fata, asked the government for foolproof security measures in and around educational institutions.

Assistant Political Agent Shahid Ali Khan said that people were digging trenches at entry points to the city, adding that security personnel would carry out body and vehicles search. Only registered vehicles will be allowed entry after due verification, he said.
