Traffic warden sacked for manhandling elderly man in Nowshera

The district police officer (DPO) Nowshera dismissed a traffic warden for abusing an elderly man in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Nowshera district, a notification issued Friday said.

Traffic warden Waseem Sajjad had signalled an elderly man, who had come to Nowshera to take part in the centenary celebrations of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), to stop outside the venue of the event. When the man failed to stop, the traffic warden assaulted and kicked the elderly citizen in the back with full force.

The kick threw the elderly man onto the ground, footage available with DawnNews showed.

The warden "misbehaved with a nearby passing person openly in response to that person's agitation/misconduct with him earlier due to sounding continuous sirens on road for road clearance as per SOP", said the notification.

After a video of the incident went viral on social media, KP Inspector General Salahuddin Khan Mehsud ordered DPO Wahid Mehmood to present a report within 24 hours.

The inquiry report presented to the police chief held the traffic warden guilty of manhandling the elderly man.

In light of the report, the IG ordered DPO Nowshera to dismiss the warden from service with immediate effect.

The DPO subsequently signed and issued the notification for the removal of the traffic warden from his post.

IG Mehsud in a statement said police are meant to serve the public and inhumane treatment with the public will not be tolerated at any cost.
