Woman set on fire in Okara by in-laws allegedly for not bearing children

A woman was set on fire in Okara allegedly by her in-laws who were disgruntled with her for being unable to conceive a child.

The incident occurred Sunday night within the jurisdiction of the Shahbore police station.

Station House Officer (SHO) Nawab Ali Dogar said the victim, Aasia Bibi, had nominated her in-laws as well as her husband, Ameer Islam, in the First Information Report (FIR), alleging they doused her with petrol and set her ablaze at their house.

Upon hearing her screams, Aasia's neighbours rushed to rescue her and shift her to the District Headquarters Hospital, Okara.

Aasia in the FIR claimed the family, which includes her father-in-law, mother-in-law, two brothers-in-law and husband, had been having arguments because of the couple's inability to conceive in the two years of their marriage.

Though her burn injuries were 35 to 40 per cent deep, the doctors said she was out of danger at the time this report was filed.

The suspects have been arrested and are currently in custody.

An investigation into the case was under way as all five are denying the charges levelled by Aasia.
