Pakistan claim silver in team tennis at Baku

BAKU: Pakistan tennis team went down fighting to Turkey in the final of the team event at 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku on Monday to clinch silver medal, the country’s second after their karate one bagged by Saadi Abbas the other day.

Turkey’s Aneel Yuksul beat Pakistan’s Mohammad Abid 7-6, 6-0 and his compatriot Altug Chilikbilik beat Aqeel Khan 6-2, 6-3 to win the tie.

In another interesting clash in volleyball on Monday, Turkey beat Pakistan 3-2 after a close contest. In the first four sets, both the nations were tied at 2-2 but Turkey clinched the fifth set 15-12 to win the fixture.

In the boxing quarter-finals, Syria’s Hasan-al-Misry beat Pakistan’s Mohibullah 5-0 while Kazakistan’s Ochkin Ilya beat Pakistan’s Arshad Hussain 5-0.

Earlier on Sunday, the women swimming team added another medal to Pakistan’s medals tally on Sunday by winning the bronze medal in women’s 4x200m freestyle competition.

The women swimming team comprised Kiran Khan, Bisma Khan, Jehanara Nabi and Mishael Aisha Ayub, secured Bronze medals for Pakistan by finishing third clocking 10:02.14 in women’s 4x200m freestyle event.In Boxing, Pakistan’s Naimatullah lost in the quarterfinal to Ammar Karbalai of Iraq 5:0.

Khalil Akhtar, who yesterday won a bronze medal for Pakistan in shooting competition, failed to finish on the podium in men’s 25m fire pistol event today. Ghulam Mustafa Bashir and Farrukh Nadeem also failed to win medals in respective events.
