Rashid and Pervez bring glory for Pakistan

KARACHI, Aug 4: Pakistan has added another honour when Rashid Ghazi-Pervez Mirza won the BFAME Friendship Pairs title at Amman, Jordan on Sunday.

According to the information available by the secretary Pakistan Bridge Federation (PBF) the pair gave superb performance as they led the from the start to outwit pairs from eight countries.

Thirty six leading pairs from Pakistan, India, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh took part in the warm-up session, Friendships pairs.

While the second to fifth position were claimed by Indian and Syrian pairs, Pakistani pair has shown remarkable consistency to win the championship.

Sultan Siddiqui-Rashid Jafer finished sixth while ladies pair of Rubina Aga-Roshan Bokhari 7th, Qudsia Dossa-Zeenat Anwer 11th and Sarfraz and Tehseen Gheewala claimed 15th position.

The zone-4 championship has already been started at Amman and Pakistan and India will resume sports ties when they were to meet on Aug 4 evening in the round Robin League matches between eight countries.

It may be recalled that both Rashidul Ghazi and Pervaiz Mirza have the distinction of winning the event twice, Rashidul Ghazi had won the event in 1985 with Tahir Masud while Pervaiz Mirza had won it earlier at Zimbabwe with Sultan Siddiqui.

Shahin Iqbal and Nisar Ahmed Khan won this event in 1995 at Amman, Jordan, Rashid Jafer and Nafis Jafer were the winners of 1999 at Colombo.—PPI
