Treats from the ocean!

Foie gras and caviar

Japan is the king of weird ice cream flavours, but France isn’t far behind after gourmet ice cream maker Philippe Faur released the foie gras and caviar ice cream.

And if you don’t know what they actually are let us tell you. Foie gras is a luxury food product made from the liver of a duck or goose, while caviar is a delicacy consisting of salt-cured fish eggs! Wanna try any of these?

Oyster

Namja Town, an indoor amusement park in Japan’s Ikebukuro district, carries dozens of unusual scoops, including beef tongue and shark fin but it is said that oyster ice cream is particularly pungent because of the actual oyster chunks mixed into the cream.

Smoked salmon

Max & Mina’s Homemade Ice Cream store in New York is famous for their unusual creations (which include chocolate-covered potato-chip fudge ice cream). But their smoked salmon and cream cheese ice cream is one of the most inventive so far, and people just love it.

Octopus

This creation is widely consumed in Japan with real octopus chunks folded into rich cream. It is famous and quite a sought-after dessert not only in Japan, but also in other parts of the world.

White bait

Shirasu refers to a school of any juvenile fish, but typically means young sardines. The ice cream is a mixture of white bait and cream, and to garnish it, there are lots of white bait sprinkled on the cone or the scoop. Can you see the black dots in those white noodles like things? These are white baits and the dots are their eyes!

Squid gut

One cannot imagine that sweet treats would have animals’ intestines but some people are making it while others loving it. This ‘delicacy’ is from Japan, again! It has tiny chunks of squid guts.

Lobster

Ben & Bill’s Chocolate Emporium in Bar Harbour, Maine (New England) makes this famous delicacy with butter ice cream with fresh (again buttered) lobster folded into each bite.

Jellyfish

Kamo Aquarium in Tsuruoka, Yamagata prefecture in Japan, has a restaurant that specialises in jellyfish recipes. One of its popular items is the jellyfish ice cream. When one eats, the texture is sort of grainy. It’s low in fat content, which makes it a perfect dessert for the calorie-conscious crowd!

Other marine animal ice cream flavours include shrimps, crabs, shark-fins, eel etc. Simple, you name it and they have it!
