Lankan priests oppose constitutional changes
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s Buddhist high priests, known as “Mahanayakes”, have called upon the government to drop its plan to write a new constitution for the country or to even amend the existing one.
In a joint statement released on Tuesday, they said there was no need for a new constitution or even an amendment to the existing constitution, but if necessary only the election system may be amended.
They also opposed a parliamentary bill seeking an amendment to the constitution in the light of the International Convention on Enforced Disappearances.
