Musharraf to address UN on Sept 24

NEW YORK, Aug 9: President Gen Pervez Musharraf is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Sept 24 when he arrives here on a 10-day visit during which he will also visit Canada, sources at the Pakistan UN mission said.

Gen Musharraf is expected to meet US President George Bush at the sidelines of the UN session as he did last year, Pakistan’s UN mission is co-ordinating with White House for such a meeting.

Sources said president could also have a one on one meeting with Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee during the UN session. However, such a meeting has not been confirmed yet.

Last year when India-Pakistan relations were at the lowest ebb, Mr Vajpayee scrupulously avoided meeting Gen Musharraf by missing UN luncheon given by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan for the heads of state and governments. But sources here are not discounting an impromptu meeting between the two adversaries during the UN session.

Sources said Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali was expected to come to address the UN General Assembly but he may have dropped the idea due to flood situation at home.
