Police recover woman confined to home for seeking freewill marriage

BADIN: A police team carried out a raid on a house in the Ward-2 area of Tando Bago town Sunday morning and recovered a 27-year-old woman allegedly confined to her residence by her parents to prevent her from contacting a freewill marriage.

The woman, Kulsoom Kaloi, is a constable in the excise and taxation department. She sent a message on the mobile phone of a local reporter on Saturday revealing that she had been confined to her house for the last three days and asked him for help. The reporter approached Badin SSP Fida Hussain Mastoi and apprised him of the woman’s plight. Eventually, the SSP ordered her safe recovery.

A police team headed by Tando Bago SHO Anwer Ali Leghari executed the order and took the woman in custody. The police officer speaking to Dawn quoted the woman as saying that her parents confined her to their house to prevent her from marrying her lover, Ali Nawaz Kolai, a peasant and resident of a village near Talhar town. The lady constable was produced before a Matli civil judge, who recorded her statement. The judge allowed her contract a freewill marriage and asked the police to ensure her protection.
