Muslims in Pakistan, India and other Asian countries joined the world in Eidul Azha celebrations on Saturday. Many offered animal sacrifices, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim's readiness to sacrifice his son to show obedience to God.

Eid prayers were offered amid tight security in Pakistan, with police and Rangers officials posted outside mosques.

Muslims believe Prophet Ibrahim's faith was tested when God commanded him to sacrifice his only son Prophet Ismail. Ibrahim was prepared to submit to the command, but then God stayed his hand, sparing his son.

The meat from the sacrifice is usually distributed among the poor and to family members, after a share is kept for personal consumption.

Clashes broke out in Srinagar after Eid prayers with India's paramilitary forces firing tear gas shells and pellet guns at hundreds of protesters throwing rocks at them near the main Eidgah prayer ground.
