Weightlifter Nooh sets Commonwealth record

LAHORE: Mohammad Nooh Dastagir Butt created a new record in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Gold Coast, Australia, when he lifted 389kg to win the juniors +105kg event, the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation announced here on Saturday.

The Pakistan team created history on Australian soil by winning two golds and as many silver medals. Nooh also finished with a silver in the seniors’ event which also saw his compatriot Mohammad Abdullah Butt competing.

Nooh lifted 167kg in the snatch and 222kg in the clean and jerk, also surpassing his national record of 380kg (165kg + 215kg).

Abdullah finished fourth with a total of 368kg (163kg + 205kg).

The country’s other two medals — a gold and silver — were won by Talha Talib in the junior and seniors +62kg category on Tuesday.
