Civil-military huddle reviews Muharram security arrangements for Karachi

Law enforcement authorities from civil and military institutions on Tuesday participated in a high-level meeting held at the Corps Headquarters Karachi to review security arrangements for the month of Muharram, a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

"Security should be tightened around places of worship, majalis and along the streets where mourning processions will be carried out," the statement quoted Corps Commander Karachi Lt Gen Shahid Baig Mirza, who was chairing the meeting, as saying.

"All security institutions should coordinate through mutual channels of communication to ensure that peace is maintained," the general added.

Lt Gen Mirza highlighted the importance of coordination between security establishments and religious leaders, members of the ulema and the residents of Karachi, the statement said.

During the meeting, the efforts of the Rangers, police and intelligence agencies for establishing peace in Karachi were lauded, the statement added.

Earlier this week, the police had decided to ask the organisers of majalis, mourning processions and other religious activities to get their licences renewed so that better security arrangements could be planned after analysing the number of events and venues.

The decision was announced at a meeting — chaired by Sindh IGP A.D. Khowaja and attended by AIGs, DIGs, SSPs and other senior officers across the province — held at the Central Police Office
