Imran warns of agitation if Sharif escapes accountability

BUNER: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Sunday warned of launching agitation for an indefinite period if the institutions responsible for conducting accountability failed to freeze the assets of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Speaking at a public meeting in the Swari area of Buner, the PTI chief described both Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari as ‘known looters’ of the exchequer. He said that Mr Sharif had been hurling allegations against judiciary and the armed forces in an attempt to find a safe exit from the Panama Papers case and the references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Mr Khan regretted that rules had been altered to pave way for a disqualified person to become the head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

Amid slogans from the crowd, he announced that the PTI leadership and workers would continue their fight till the corrupt leaders met their logical end.

Imran Khan also came down hard on Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and alleged that the latter was hand in glove with the government to bring an amendment to the Khatm-i-Nabuwwat declaration.

He expressed the confidence that people would see change in the upcoming general election and repeatedly addressed the youth. “You (the youth) will bring about change under the banner of PTI for a developed, prosperous and peaceful Pakistan,” he said.

According to a Dawn.com report, Imran Khan accused Nawaz Sharif of attempting to provoke the army to take over.

He also criticised the former premier for his recent statements, saying the latter kept asking, ‘why have I been ousted (mujhe kiyun nikala)’, though it’s known to all and sundry that he had been disqualified by the Supreme Court after due process and now he had been facing NAB cases.

Mr Khan lambasted Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for addressing a disqualified person as prime minister in his speeches.

“If Nawaz Sharif is punished for money laundering, then all his money, bank accounts and properties will be frozen. They will be sold and the money will return to Pakistan,” Mr Khan said. “So he’s trying his best to save himself. He’s trying his best for the army takeover. He will damage the country to save himself,” the PTI chief alleged.

“Get ready,” he asked the youth. “If he (Nawaz Sharif) does this, then the PTI will be on the streets of Islamabad and we will not let him to be successful in destroying the order of our country.”

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak also spoke.
