At least 11 dead, 37 injured in Chaghi road accident

At least 11 people lost their lives and some 37 others were injured in a deadly traffic accident in Balochistan's Chaghi district on Tuesday evening.

The traffic accident took place in Laghap area, 12 kilometres away from Dalbandin, when a Taftan bound passenger bus from Quetta collided with a trailer coming from the opposite side, Levies officials said.

Subsequently, four people died on the spot, whereas, others succumbed to their injuries on their way and during treatment at a local hospital.

Local tribesmen and Levies personnel reached the spot and shifted the injured, including women and children, to Dalbandin hospital for medical treatment. An emergency was imposed in Dalbandin hospital.

The seriously injured patients have been shifted to Quetta for further treatment.

Road accidents involving passenger buses, trailers and wagons are common in Balochistan. In 2014, 35 people had died in a crash between two buses and an oil tanker in Hub.

Earlier this month, 14 people were killed and dozens injured when a wagon collided with a bus in Mastung district of Balochistan.

Poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving are cited as common reasons behind accidents in Pakistan.

Around 9,000 road accidents are reported to the police every year since 2011, killing more than 4,500 people on average, according to figures from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
