Malir tame Korangi in DG Rangers hockey
KARACHI: District Malir overcame a stiff challenge from District Korangi to win 4-3 in the DG Rangers Sindh Inter-district hockey league at the Karachi Hockey Association (KHA) Spots Complex on Saturday.
Faisal Khan, Arifullah, Abrar Khan and Azlan Khan slammed one goal apiece for the winners.
Rao Hammad, Faizan Khan and Shahzeb earned scoring honours for the losers.
The 15-year-old goalkeeper of Malir, Taimur Shaikh, was declared man of the match for his outstanding keeping under the bar.
The winning outfit was led by discarded Pakistan captain Haseem Khan.
District Central and District West conjured up contrasting victories over their opponents in the matches played the other day.
Central carved out 2-0 victory over District South with Waseem Aslam and Anas scoring one goal each in the opening fixture.
West earned full points while getting the better of District East by odd goal in five (3-2).
Imran, Salman and Faheem Khan guided the team to victory. Irfan and Ali Hasan reduced the deficit for losers.
Seven outfits – six districts of the city and DG Rangers XI – are competing in the richest-ever local event of the game which carry cash prizes of approximately rupees one million, Rs945,000 to be precise.
The best player of the tournament, top scorer of the tournament and best goalkeeper of the tournament will be awarded a brand new 70 cc motorcycle and Rs 50,000 apiece.
According to break-up, the winners will receive a lucrative purse of Rs 500,000 and runners-up gets Rs 250,000.
Player of the match of every match gets Rs 5,000 apiece.
The event concludes on Nov 14. The teams have been divided into two pools.
A: District Central, District South, DG Rangers XI.
B:District East, District West, District Malir, District Korangi.
