Court moved against Maryam for anti-judges remarks

LAHORE: A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court seeking contempt of court proceedings against Maryam Nawaz, daughter of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, for her alleged contemptuous remarks against judges of the Supreme Court.

Amna Malik of the Civil Society Network filed the petition through Advocate Azhar Siddique pleading that on Nov 8, a press statement was released by the PML-N and its leadership, wherein Maryam committed a contempt of court, ridiculed and scandalised the judges.

The petitioner said Maryam defamed the judges of superior courts besides criticising the state institutions. She contended that Absar Alam as chairman of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) was equally responsible for defaming judges as he failed to stop airing the contemptuous remarks of Maryam on news channels.

The petitioner also annexed with the petition clippings of Maryam’s statements aired on news channels and published in newspapers.

The petitioner asked the court to initiate contempt proceedings against Maryam and the Pemra chairman over their contemptuous conduct.
