FIFA chief Infantino gives VAR thumbs up

DUBAI: FIFA president Gianni Infantino has given his whole hearted backing to the controversial video assistant referee technology.

VAR, as it is known, has been trialled since the start of this season in Serie A and the Bundesliga, and will be introduced to Spanish La Liga next season.

The system, criticised by some fans for slowing a game down, can only be used for key incidents in matches regarding goals, penalty decisions, straight red card decisions and cases of mistaken identity.

The technology’s use in those leagues is part of the tests being carried out by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

“The results so far have been very encouraging, very positive,” Infantino told a sports conference in Dubai. “Decisions which were taken wrongly have been altered to take the right decisions. Sometimes it takes a few seconds too long....but we are very positive and I am very positive that VAR will be a great investment into modern football “(It) can be used all over the world in order to help and assist the referees.”

Despite his support, Infantino said football’s rulers had been right to take their time over introducing such a radical new ingredient to the game.

“We have to protect the game and we have to invest in the protection of the game.

“For this reason, before we change anything on the laws of the game, we have to be very careful, and we have to think about it not only once or twice or three times, but hundreds of times.

“Nevertheless, I believe it was the right decision we took one and a half years ago to test the VAR’.

“Too many discussions about it in previous years but we never tested it.” He said it wasn’t “correct or fair” that in some cases the referee was the only one unaware he had made a wrong decision “because we prohibited him from knowing”.

FIFA have yet to confirm whether the VAR will be used at next year’s World Cup in Russia.

‘POSITIVE MESSAGE’

Infantino also said that the joint bid by Canada, Mexico and the United States for the 2026 World Cup sends a “positive message”, while admitting that the decision to award two World Cups simultaneously (Russia in 2018 and Qatar 2022) was a mistake.

“One mistake was already made to award two World Cups at the same time (2018 and 2022),” he said.

“We want the best World Cup ever in 2018 and 2022, but for 2026, we have to organise as well the best bidding process. Joint biddings are certainly positive. And let me say one more thing, to have Canada, US and Mexico coming together for a joint project, already this is a positive message.”

The Canada, Mexico and the United States joint-bid for 2026 faces competition only from Morocco. It will be the first tournament to feature 48 teams compared to 2018 and 2022 which will welcome 32 countries each.
