New corps commander for Multan

ISLAMABAD, May 5: President and Chief of the Army Staff Gen Pervez Musharraf on Thursday made some changes in the army command and promoted Maj-Gen Syed Sabahat Hussain to the rank of lieutenant-general. Lt-Gen Sabahat’s promotion and subsequent appointment as Corps Commander Multan was followed by transfers of the commander of the Strategic Force Command and the Quarter Master General (QMG).

Lt-Gen Sabahat is replacing, as Corps Commander Multan, Lt-Gen Afzal Muzaffar, who has been appointed Quarter Master General. The incumbent QMG, Lt-Gen Khalid Munir, will take over as head of the Army Strategic Force Command from Lt-Gen Ghulam Mustafa who would be retiring soon.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lt-Gen Sabahat was commissioned in the Guides Infantry, Frontier Force Regiment, on Nov 14, 1971. He saw combat action during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. A graduate of the Command and Staff College, Quetta, and the National Defence College, Islamabad, Lt-Gen Sabahat held a variety of staff, instructional and command assignments. He has been Brigade-Major of an Infantry Brigade and has served in the Military Operations Directorate. He has also served on the faculty of the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul, Command and Staff College Quetta and National Defence College, Islamabad.

Lt-Gen Sabahat has commanded an infantry brigade and a strike division and served as military secretary with three prime ministers. At present, he is Vice-Chief of General Staff at General Headquarters, Rawalpindi.
