ATC grants police physical remand of 196 PU students involved in clash

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Wednesday granted police physical remand of 196 Punjab University students involved in a clash that left at least 12 injured earlier this week.

On Monday, a brawl had erupted between two student groups ─ Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT) and the Pukhtun Baloch Council ─ over holding of the Pioneer Festival by the IJT to welcome newcomers on the ground of the College of Electrical Engineering Department. At least ten students and two police officials were injured in the clash.

On Tuesday, 87 students had been arrested and 37 had been expelled. The number of suspects has increased to 196, police told the ATC Judge Sajjad Ahmed during Wednesday's hearing.

The suspects were brought to the court under tight security for today's hearing.

Police told the court that, during the clash, the students had damaged two cars and five motorcycles. Police added that dozens of students were injured in the clash.

The court was told that the students had also set fire to the Electric Engineering Department and tortured personnel.
