National hard court tennis from May 17

KARACHI, May 13: The Greener Pakistan National hard court tennis championship, promoted by the Subh-e-Nau, begins from May 17 to 23, at the Karachi Gymkhana. Over 40 players from Karachi have already confirmed their participation, among them being Nomi Qamar, Asim Shafiq and Aqeel Khan. Many players from upcountry are also expected.

Among the events to be held are the men’s singles, men’s doubles, juniors under-17, boys under-13, ladies singles and doubles, ladies under-18, and mixed doubles (will depend on the number of entries received). The total prize money is Rs150,000, with the winner of the men’s singles receiving Rs30,000 and the ladies singles winner receiving a purse of Rs10,000. Upcountry players will receive a daily allowance of Rs400 until elimination.

Meanwhile, the former Pakistan captain Khwaja Saeed Hai said that Subh-e-Nau was doing an excellent job while promoting tennis in the country.

Holding this event now here, the veteran said that he would like to congratulate the organisers on creating both events. The Karachi event is being held under the auspices of the Sindh Tennis Association.
