PU restores admission of 17 students

LAHORE: The Punjab University Discipline Committee on Tuesday restored admission of 17 students – 13 from the Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT) and four others from Pakhtun and Baloch councils.

Up to 12 students were injured when IJT and Pakhtun Council activists had clashed over holding an event in January last.

The university had registered cases under terrorism charges against the students which were latter quashed on the intervention of the Balochistan government.

More than 225 students, who were arrested during the operation, were later released.

The discipline committee had expelled 17 students from both organisations from the university.

However, student organisations continued to protest against the action and installed camp outside the vice chancellor office for five days. The vice-chancellor directed them to appeal against their expulsion after negotiation.

The students’ appeals were settled by the discipline committee.

A PU spokesman said the discipline committee had restored all of them and turned the expulsion into rustication for one year.
